TREBUCHET PROJECT:
Purpose and Brief Description:
Our trebuchet project in physics was all about the actual physics that go into the launching of a trebuchet by using projectile motion. During this project we used twenty first century skills in order to be active in learning and collaborating with our peers. After having lot so of class time to learn about the physics of a trebuchet, we had to apply given and known knowledge to work with a group and create a trebuchet that was designed based off of a certain era. We used this information to culturally represent what it was based off of and point out the differences between the physics and details in each group’s final project.
The Science of the Project:
With a counterweight trebuchet, there is more than the basic parts to make it work. There is a whole gob of physics that goes into it to make it successful and mostly consistent. The point of this project was to understand the following concept: energy (both kinetic and potential), velocity, acceleration, and projectile motion. After we understood the following these concepts, we had to incorporate it into our own physical design. First thing to understand is how to throw an object (projectile) as far as possible. In order to do so, we must push our Velocity (speed and direction) as high as possible. In order to successfully do that, we would have to raise the Potential ( also known as mechanical) Energy to its max. Once you are able to complete and understand that concept and incorporate it into your design, your trebuchet will be more successfully.
One thing that is important to know is the ratios of one concept to another and good balance for success. A crucial part of our project that uses balance is the balance between Mass and Velocity ( It can also be called Kinetic Energy.) One thing that cannot be forgotten in our project research is gravity. Gravity makes almost all of the physics that we study, happen. That includes projectile motion, which, accelerates (Increase or degrees in speed, in this case increases) the velocity of a falling object by 9.8 meters per second. Don't forget the squared part which just means it's a rate over a rate ( because it shows the rate at which a change is changing.) When your projectile is launched, it should be launched at approximately 45 degrees at release for its maximum potential. All of these concepts are a significant part of what makes a trebuchet consistent, successful and reliable.
Helpful Equations:
-KE=1/2m⋅v²)
-(g=9.3m/s²)
Twenty First Century Skills:
Being a successful peer and student is all about how you express your intelligence and ideals through others and yourself. Through each project you complete comes a new lesson about your abilities in work ethic. In a successful community of learners, one should be able to use collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. Each one of those are significant factors into one’s ability in life and throughout their careers.
When one is actively engaged in collaboration, they found out some of their attributes by learning through others. Throughout all the time of me working in a group, each time shares its own lesson that I haven't learned or maybe even bringing light to things I haven't thought of. By using and listening to others ideas, you are able to have different perspectives and get more work done with the more people you collaborate with. Communication and collaboration work hand in hand, you can’t have one without the other. Communication allows people to sustain positive relationships whether big or small. When communication is put into effect, a group has the ability to create better work. Critical thinking is used when one applies themselves to a problem or situation and is able to have effective solving in more creative ways. This ability can sometimes be somewhat stressful, though, it allows one to solve an issue or conflict with given information no matter the task. Creativity is something that ties into mostly everything in life, using that in a group setting is very important. This allows each style of processing and expression to be incorporated into a project. Creativity i not just used for the eyes, creativity can also be the way someone solve; coming up with creative ways to problem solve or express their knowledge. Every single one of those factors was used during my project and learning time during our trebuchet project. I used each one to apply myself, express, and learn from my peers. I was able to effectively and actively use my time to connect with my group so we had the ability to complete our project with consistency.
Challenges and Overcoming Them:
During every project, there are challenges that you and your peers must face in order to successfully problem solve. Efficiency is a hard thing to have when a group is so focused on the design or detail of their project. This happened with my group, we eventually gave up on focusing on the physics and science of the project and we rushed out the project and finished it quickly. This ended up making our project not have proper physics to work well, though, it was very consistent which led to my group asking the gold. Though I do not belief we completely solved our challenges, we still overcame any frustration that may have occurred. Our group didn't really have any anger or negative relations, but even the slightest bit of frustration was solved with effective communication.
Personal Characteristics Incorporated:
In my experience with group work, I always lead. Leading is something I always do even if I don't mean to. I feel that the attributes of a leader help a group with efficiency and creativity in their work. Without a leader in a group, the people with rarely get things started and have a hard time coming up with new ideas for their project and for problem solving. Though, sometimes you can take over as a leader, but it is an extremely helpful skill to have whether it comes out working individually or with other people. In this project, My ability to lead helped me come up with ideas for our design. One thing is that I did also use my ability to follow my peers ideas, we all worked together to form something that we were all satisfied with.
